SAFP is committed to strengthening the health and wellbeing of professional footballers — not only in Switzerland, but as part of a wider international movement. As part of this ongoing effort, SAFP representatives met with David Aganzo, President of the International Federation of Professional Footballers (AIF) and the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE), in Madrid.
The meeting focused on the next steps in establishing the AIF Medical Department, a new international body dedicated to advancing player health through research, medical standards, and shared expertise across national player associations.
Discussions centred on three pillars that will guide this collaboration going forward: science, ensuring that decisions on player health are grounded in solid medical research; education, equipping players, staff, and associations with the knowledge to prevent and manage health risks; and international cooperation, building a network of player unions working together rather than in isolation.
This exchange reflects a broader principle at the heart of SAFP’s work: player health should not depend on which country a footballer plays in. By connecting with organisations like AIF and AFE, SAFP is helping build a more unified, coordinated approach to protecting players across borders.
